Portraiture is unique among artistic genres not least of all because, when it works, it has the power to capture the indomitable spirit and peculiar personalities of loved ones, revered leaders and iconic personages. Portraits make obvious heirloom pieces, handed down through the generations, hung in living rooms and connecting us to our ancestry. We sing its praises but we’ll also admit: portraiture is often predictable and old-fashioned to a fault.
