Street Style: Red, White and Blue with Leopard and Bangles

christine-feature

STREET STYLE: More so than clothing it’s often jewelry that is handed down, given as a token of love or relationships and worn by a woman her entire lifetime no matter her age or size. And nothing stops us quite in our tracks like a woman in amazing jewelry. It’s not layers of bling that automatically impress, but the way she puts the pieces together, and of course the story behind them. Today’s installment of Street Style features fashion blogger Christine Cameron flaunting a fabulously unexpected combination of red, white and blue with attention-getting jewelry at the wrist and a glamorous leopard clutch.

Jewelry Trend: Vintage Cameos

JEWELRY TREND: Many traditions only get better with age, and cameo-carving is proof. An ancient technique originating in Greece and Rome, cameos were re-popularized in more recent history by the Queen Victoria, who liked to pair the dainty pieces dangling from a velvet ribbon.

JEWELRY TREND: If you’re one of those people for whom the word brass conjures up cheapness, think again. Antique brass is making a major resurgence in fashion jewelry and is extremely chic on when combined with unexpected materials and semi-precious stones.

Elizabeth Taylor’s Jewelry Legacy

JEWELRY: When Elizabeth Taylor passed away last week, she left behind a jewelry collection reportedly worth $150 million. (Some of her treasures are currently on display in the Cooper Hewitt’s Van Cleef exhibit). No question that $150 million is a staggering figure reflective of a lifetime of collecting. Taylor, a bonafide jewelry queen, had a love of diamonds that was signature, and which only played into her status as a richly iconic star with a stormy private life marked by seven marriages.

Street Style: New York City Jewelry Mavens on The Advanced Style Blog

STREET STYLE: “Proof from the wise and silver-haired set that personal style advances with age,” so reads the tagline of The Advanced Style blog, a street style site founded by photographer Ari Seth Cohen and dedicated to showcasing senior citizens in creative, unique and, often, outlandish outfits. Recently, Cohen was asked by Vogue Japan to create a series of street style focusing on jewelry. It’s no surprise that older women who have been collecting personal pieces for decades (and can just dip into their jewelry box and come out with, say, an amazing bakelite bracelet from the ’60s or mom’s Victorian ring, for example) have quite a flair for this stuff. Here are some of our favorite jewelry mavens captured by Cohen.
