“My heirloom is a picture of my girlfriend and I from when we just started dating.  It reminds me of how wonderful it felt to be with someone so special, and I still get that feeling every time I look at it.”

“My favorite heirloom is my engagement ring. It was my maternal grandmother’s wedding ring. My grandparents were married for more than 55 years (1938-1994). I attended their 50th anniversary party when I was 14 and I only hope that I can make the same milestone with my husband.

Because the ring was in storage for a while (after she passed away), my husband had to take it to an antique jeweler to restore it back to the ring’s original glory. My mother thinks it looks even better now than it did when my grandmother wore it. I wear it all of the time along with a replicated wedding band we designed to compliment the ring.”

“The one most important heirloom I own belonged to my mother. It is a half-used bottle of her perfume–the scent she was wearing prior to her last hospitalization and passing.  Quite frequently I pick up the bottle, smell her fragrance, and she is back with me for a few moments!  I treasure those moments.”

“My husband bought this necklace 40 years ago for his  grandma. Now our daughter gets to wear it on special occasions. Every time she puts it on, it reminds me how much love a child can give.”

“My grandfather gave a bracelet to me when I was five years old. That was 50 years ago. It is a charm bracelet and most of the charms are bells.  It is very precious to me, along with the memories of my grandfather’s laugh.”

“Although I have numerous family heirlooms that have been passed down through generations, without a doubt, the most meaningful to me is the antique diamond ring that my husband presented to me the day he asked me to marry him at the base of Mt. Hood in Oregon.

This fragile yellow gold ring with a mine-cut diamond and a broken prong, I soon learned, had been his maternal grandmother’’s engagement ring when she married on June 23, 1904.  Still in its original condition, this ring is now my most treasured possession, and I keep it safe along with his grandmother’s cameo brooch (pictured), which was given to me by my husband’’s late mother. The brooch dates back to the early 1900’s as well.”

We asked her What’s Your Heirloom? Here’s Marion’s answer:

“My heirloom is a teddy bear. A very simple bear. My father, who was born on a reservation in Brewton, Alabama, was given this bear by his family. When I was born, the bear was given to me.  When I was 23 I passed him down to my son, who slept with him every night, carried him everywhere until he started school. It still sits on his dresser even though he’s now 22 . This ragged bear that has been bitten, cried on, and laughed with will go to his child one day. He’s not worth anything in what others would call value, but to us, all three generations, he is priceless. Every time I look at Charlie (the bear’s name) I get choked up inside. We could never replace this ragged, beautiful bear.”
