Lovespoons Are a Labor of Love

What are lovespoons? These beautifully hand-carved wooden spoons are part of a popular Welsh tradition dating back to the 16th century. Back then, when men fell in love at first sight, they immediately began carving (for months!) a lovespoon as a sign of courtship to the lady and her family. Over time, he would add hearts or other symbols that made his intentions to marry her known. Call it an olden day Valentine’s gift of sorts!

Today, Welsh couples turn to master craftsmen, like Edwin Williams, to custom design unique, heirloom-worthy spoons that tell their love story. Considered the most talented carver in the region, according to the owner of Lovespoons Gallery in Wales, Williams, along with his wife, has created spoons for Nelson Mandela, Prince Charles, and countless others.

In this Monica Rich Kosann original video, we visit with the couple, who live outside the picturesque seaside town of Mumbles, Wales, to chat about this long-lasting romantic ritual.
