Unconventional Uses for a Locket, Part II
Even if you are not someone who traditionally relishes the idea of fastening a single locket around your neck, you’ll be surprised how many purposes this one powerful object serves. Lockets are mysterious, narrative and deeply personal. Yesterday we discussed using lockets to store vacation photographs, partake in wedding rituals and wrap gifts. Today, I show you how a locket can become a conduit for everything from self-motivation to fashion and style.

Have a mantra
There is no denying that images are beautiful but in reality, a locket need not contain pictures. Are you a woman of words? Engrave or carry a printed snippet of a favorite poem, a name, a single word or a mantra, even something as simple as “carpe diem,” inside your locket. Keep the contents private or share them with the world—it’s up to you. One thing is certain: you will feel joy every time you open your locket and see those special words.
Store a child’s art work
Sketch drawings and finger paintings on the refrigerator are iconic in a parent’s life, but what sweeter means of keeping a child’s efforts close to the heart than photocopying and shrinking a piece of homemade art to fit inside your locket? This way, even the staunchest of minimalist mothers can keep her stainless surfaces magnet-free without guilt because she is still paying homage to her little Picasso.
Express your own unique style
Don’t stop at one locket. In Victorian times, a mother might have had five or seven kids’ pictures hanging around her neck. Nowadays, anything goes. String a few different-size and shape lockets on a vintage chain; mix silver, gold and unexpected materials if you prefer; and remember, like anything timeless, a fine locket can always be layered with whatever is in fashion.
