We asked her What’s Your Heirloom? Here’s Marion’s answer:
“My heirloom is a teddy bear. A very simple bear. My father, who was born on a reservation in Brewton, Alabama, was given this bear by his family. When I was born, the bear was given to me. When I was 23 I passed him down to my son, who slept with him every night, carried him everywhere until he started school. It still sits on his dresser even though he’s now 22 . This ragged bear that has been bitten, cried on, and laughed with will go to his child one day. He’s not worth anything in what others would call value, but to us, all three generations, he is priceless. Every time I look at Charlie (the bear’s name) I get choked up inside. We could never replace this ragged, beautiful bear.”
