Every birthday or holiday, I hold my breath and hope that today is the day when my grandmother will finally decide to give me one of her many Chanel chain bags. Her large collection is both wonderful and unnerving, especially when you learn that she never wears them. Which is a shame for two reasons: 1) I adore them (she likes to scream “They’re not yours yet!” whenever she catches me ogling and fondling them); and 2) they perfectly complete any outfit regardless of their wearer’s style.
I mean, if my grandmother who dons a kempt bob, classic cardigan and slacks can pull it off just as well as someone like me–a gal with long, messy hair, torn jeans, and motorcycle boots–that is pretty remarkable. And wasn’t this fashion designer Coco Chanel’s intention? A style every woman can wear.
Named “2.55″ for the month and year Chanel gave birth to this iconic purse, it made its debut nearly 25 years after she first introduced functional, stylish shoulder straps to the world of handbag design. Next time you’re clutching your iPhone in one hand, a latte in the other, and bag over your shoulder, think of Chanel (and quietly thank her).
Unlike other pocketbooks from long ago and even today, the 2.55 stands out for its unique quilted lambskin (inspired by race horse jockey jackets), chain strap, various colors, shapes and sizes, and its famous logo (the crisscrossed double C).
Though often imitated, which only flattered Chanel, it is still one of a kind. New or old, this durable, comfortable, and forever fashionable accessory is a piece you can always wear–that is, if your daughter or granddaughter doesn’t steal it first.

While there are many sites today dedicated to the pursuit of fashion and style, here at MRK Style we approach these subjects through a collector’s lens. Through exploring how people relate to Art, Family, Fashion, Food, Film and Travel—essentially life’s various, everyday obsessions—we reflect on how we all live with the things we love.
